Amatus-sami-Karim is a performative conceptual artist working in the mediums of Music, Film and Theatre primarily dealing with themes related to identity, history and popular culture. The earlier years of her life were spent in the South Side of Chicago across the street from the Cabrini Green Projects in her father’s Mosque. After her parents divorce her later formative years were spent in Philly with her mom who is a social-worker. After dealing with multiple deaths to gun violence an individual can easily get lost in the world, but it can also prove how resilient a human being can be. This multi-talented creator gave her complexity voice and she made a quilt with the tapestry of her experiences.
A graduate of Tisch School of the Arts and one year at RADA in acting, Amatus’ debut EP Broken Compass, has been featured in tastemaker blogs such as Pigeons and Planes, Afro Punk, Obscure Sound, Hollywood Playlist, OkayPlayer, and The Source just to name a few. Her most recent feature film composition was Daisy and Max, a documentary for Al-Jazeera America which aired in December 2015. She composed the music for Dominique Morrisseau’s Obie Award winning play Sunset Baby, Directed by Kamilah Forbes at the Labyrinth Theater Company, among others. Amatus has also collaborated with artists Meshell Ndegeocello, Roy Hargrove, Jneiro Jarel as well as scored projects for PBS, Georgia Shakespeare Festival, 651 Arts, POV, Ford Foundation, and Rooftop Films.
2018 DRAMA DESK AWARD nominee, Amatus just completed the sound-design/music for The Home Coming Queen, Written by NGOZI ANYANWU Directed by AWOYE TIMPO @AtlanticTheatre. Currently she is in production for a few short films with cherished collaborators.
